Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan

Stayed

In Stuytown with Soren and Kara.  Soren got the award for the worst host ever.  The accommodations were solid, however.  I actually had the largest room in the apartment with a bed and even a couch.  Their old roommate moved out the day before I left! I’m not sure I had ever set foot in Stuyvesant Town before this week.  It’s a unique place.  Over 25,000 people live there.

Among the 25,000 are people ranging from college students to people who have lived there since the original construction. In the latter category, I met 94 year old Bernie, my first interviewee for the City Stories project as part of my fellowship with SoundCloud.  More info here about the fellowship, and check my Tumblr for updates.  Here’s the interview with Bernie.

Oh, And Soren was actually a great host. He’s always looking for something fun and interesting to do, and often buying the tickets far out in advance.  He just didn’t understand the concept of letting the nomad pay for things.

Ate

There aren’t a ton of dining options in Stuy Town, but Soren and Kara cooked Sunday Dinner – Baked Ziti and Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwiches.  Peanut Butter was the cookie, and then three types of ice cream filling.  I can’t recommend this enough. Kara is a genius.

Drank

Amor y Amargo – expensive, delicious, and serious cocktails.  There are only 13 seats in the place.

Bleecker Heights Bar – A University of Arizona Bar.  Exactly the type of thing I love about this project.  I’ve walked by this place (above 5 guys) one hundred times and never even realized there was a bar upstairs.  Soren is pretty much the mayor of the bar.

Crocodile Lounge – free pizza with every beer.  what a concept!

International Bar – Go here if you want to get drunk

Watched

Art Battles – This is worth checking out.  4 artists compete for two hours and the winner got sent to Spain.  One artist was leaps and bounds beyond the others, however.  I also think it would have been interesting to see everyone painting one subject.

Hoodie Allen at Webster Hall – I felt old at this concert, but he put on a good show and I’d never been to Webster Hall before.

Missed

Basketball, a golf lesson with Bernie, and other activities in Stuy Town. What else (or who else) did I miss?
